Meta is testing its own AI chip to avoid dependence on NVIDIA

Meta has begun testing its own chip for training artificial intelligence systems. If successful, it could deal a serious blow to NVIDIA’s position, Reuters reports.

Developing its own chip is part of Meta’s long-term plan to reduce the cost of AI infrastructure. The company forecasts total spending in 2025 of $114-119 billion, of which about $65 billion will be spent on infrastructure.

One source said the new Meta chip is a dedicated accelerator, meaning it’s designed to perform only AI-specific tasks. That could make it more power-efficient than integrated graphics processors (GPUs) typically used for AI workloads. The source also noted that Taiwan-based TSMC helped develop the Meta chip.

Testing typically costs tens of millions of dollars and takes about three to six months, and there is no guarantee that the test will be successful. If it fails, Meta will be forced to look for a design problem and manufacture the chips again.
