Nvidia Might Be Stealthily Lowering GPU Prices

Nvidia might be stealthily lowering the prices of its RTX 50-series cards, as reports are trickling in that the latest generation of RTX 50-series GPUs are being sold in some select territories at below their original recommended retail price. A Japanese retailer has listed the RTX 5070 at around $20 less than the local MSRP, and in the UK, Nvidia itself is selling the 5070 at about a 4% discount. That’s not the major price drops we’d need to get these cards to affordable levels, and there’s no sign that stock has caught up with demand, but it’s a start.

The pricing for Nvidia’s latest-generation RTX 50-series graphics cards has been way beyond their suggested retail price since they first went on sale. Extreme interest from gamers and scalpers alike sent the $2,000 RTX 5090 soaring well over $3,000, and even more modest cards like the 5070 Ti went from $750 to over $1,200 at some retailers. But prices might be slowly coming down and Nvidia might be driving them, as it’s joined retailers in lowering some prices for some of its cards.

The RTX 5070 debuted at $550 in the US, but taxes raise that price elsewhere in the world, and in Japan, it works out to around $753. That’s for the base reference design, too, not factoring in the higher costs of more premium offerings with advanced cooling or factory overclocks. It’s intriguing, then, that a Palit Infinity 3 RTX 5070 showed up on Japanese hardware retailer Dospara, with a price tag of 105,600 yen, or around $735, via Wccftech.

That’s not a huge discount, but it is a discount nonetheless and the most substantial we’ve seen at any retail outlet so far. It doesn’t suggest that we can expect major price drops moving forward, but along with Nvidia lowering its prices in the UK, this might be the first sign that broader price drops are coming—assuming tariffs don’t destroy any attempts to normalize pricing.

Indeed Nvidia has cut the price of its RTX 5070 by around 4% in the UK, lowering it from its original debut price of £539, to £519. That works out to around $677, so it’s still not cheap, but it gives us additional evidence that Nvidia’s commitment to higher prices may be faltering. Perhaps it’s in the wake of its ongoing scandals or because AMD’s RX 9070 XT and 9070 are great alternatives. None of the cards have been in stock for long, but the pressure may be mounting on Team Green.
