Officials: Nvidia and Telekom to build data centre in Munich
German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom and US chip manufacturer Nvidia are planning to build a large data centre in Munich, the Bavarian government said on Tuesday.
Around 10,000 computing units will be used in the project in the Bavarian capital, according to the state Economy Ministry.
Telekom initially did not respond to requests for comment.
Bavarian Economy Minister Hubert Aiwanger, said:
We are in contact with Telekom and support the project in Munich,
He said the plans represent “another significant investment in future technologies” in Bavaria.
According to estimates by digital association Bitkom, Germany needs to ramp up its data centre and cloud capacity to strengthen digital independence and reduce its dependence on countries such as the US and China.
Bitkom President Ralf Wintergerst, told dpa in September,
Within Europe, Germany has the highest computing capacity,
In international comparison, however, Germany is losing ground, he said.
